Megapolis Proposal, v.1
Organization: LADIO (a fem-focused network of sound artists and radio professionals in NY)
Event proposal (300 words or less): Would you choose to be 14 again? There’s something magical and tragically serious about that age; an emerging sense of independence and identity, mixed with narcissism and self loathing. This was the height of solipsism, your pliability peak, seeped with raw creativity. Why is everything we created at that age so earnest and completely mortifying? Ladio’s going to give you the chance to rewrite your adolescence, or live the adolescence you never had. Join us for a slumber-party.
Each participating Ladio will create an original work going into the event, helping to build the atmosphere of restored/explored youth to the space. Participants will be asked to spread chain letters throughout the festival, leave a memory at the door, participate in 4 activity stations at the party, and pose for a morning-after schoolpicture.
These are the activity stations:
1. Seven Minutes in Audio Heaven: A closet with a microphone, a person you’ll be assigned to at random. Interview, make-out, perform an improvised drama, advice, questions, schemes, scams and confessions. You can do no wrong.
2. Send a Video Message to Your 14-year-old-self: We’ll provide the work station and the questions, you brush your hair. These will be uploaded to YouTube live.
3. Games, Games, Crushes and the Supernatural: Ouija board, light as a feather stiff as a board, M.A.S.H., spin the bottle, telephone, exercises for mapping our 14 year old brains, and more! Ladios will facilitate games and document them with recording equipment and cameras.
4. Open mic: Readings from Judy Blume/Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, perform angst-filled poetry, read from your old livejournal or AIM chats, bring your box of old notes, improvise a confession or retell an embarrassing moments. If you don’t have something to share, sign yourself up for some truth or dare.
Special equipment requests (keep it short and we’ll love you forever): House w/ closets, wifi, boys, mic stand & amp.
What kind of related work have you done in the past? (200 words or less): Ladio is a blossoming young woman, a virgin. This is going to be our debutant ball. The women in Ladio bring a variety of experiences to the table — sound/transmission art, journalism, documentary radio — and it promises to be a very lovely spread.
